PAINTED FRESCOES = STREET ART?

The study of the traces of painted plaster from the Roman phases of the Paphos theatre by Professor Diana Wood Conroy is one of the most exciting aspects of the Paphos Theatre Archaeological Project. It gives a tantalising glimpse of how colourful antiquity must have been, as well as the creative expression on the walls of the theatre (an old building by the time of the application of the paint brush to the plastered surface of the parodoi in the Antonine phase).

That is why it is exciting to see splashes of colour on old walls now in Ktima Paphos as part of the Pafos2017 festivities.  Street art is reflective of contemporary culture just as the designs on the theatre's wall reflected Roman tastes and styles.  Some of the works exhibited in Paphos are extraordinary.

One can only wonder what future archaeologist will make of the faded traces of the painted walls of Paphos c. 2017.

Street art is great as long as it promotes positivity. Here in our country, street art is actually accepted as long as the message is not explicit or hurtful. We used to have a lot of street art with negative messages on them, so the mayor allowed artists to paint over these street art. It then turned into a beautiful project where artists get to inspire others with their talent and creativity. There are few people, though, who consider street art as vandalism, but I think that as long as they have the permit and their intention is good, then it is not really vandalism.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.

Street arts are good. They are the visible art for me because the artist can really do anything and it seems like as an artist, they are freely expressing their ideas. However, in our country, it is prohibited to have street art except if it is allowed by the government or any private owner of the structure. It is really good seeing arts in the street. As an office worker, it releases my stress whenever I get to see street arts when going home or going to office.
